BECOMING BROOKE

The Encouragement Coach: The Beginning

Rainbows, Puppies, and a few Clues…

Recently, my dad gathered our family on a call. He'd had a busy week getting paperwork in order and making some important decisions. At one point he explained why he hadn't chosen me for one particular responsibility:

“Brooke is all rainbows and puppies.” 🌈🐶

“I resemble that remark!” I answered enthusiastically.

Everybody laughed.

I've thought about that sentence since.

Because he's right.

I've always been that person.

I was taught to have a good attitude. Work hard. Show up. Look for the good.

Be gracious, grateful, and hospitable.

Somewhere along the way, those things became more than things I did.

Truly, they were who I am.

However, I didn't always recognize them as a heavenly gift.

No really, It's Just a Card…

Years ago, I was asked to be responsible for mailing birthday cards, special-occasion cards, and little notes to people.

I took this responsibility quite seriously.

I still do. We need happy mail!

One day, Pastor Brenda was praying over me. Several people were praying out loud, and I don't recall the specific words being prayed, but in the middle of it all, I heard:

“Encouragement.”

I burst into tears.

Encouragement?

I was just mailing cards.

Except...maybe I wasn't just mailing cards.

Something I'd been doing naturally suddenly had a name.

That word anchored something in me.

Over time, there have been more breadcrumbs.

For years, I wrote a daily Bible study. People responded.

Eventually, I started telling those stories out loud on Facebook Live.

One day, without some grand business plan or branding meeting,

I heard myself close by saying:

“Thanks for allowing me to be your Encouragement Coach.”

Huh? Wait? What?

Where did that come from?

And what am I supposed to do with it?

Life continued. Years passed. There were children and grandchildren, joys and losses, responsibilities, dreams, distractions, plans that worked and plenty that didn't.

Every so often, right in the middle of everyday life,

The Encouragement Coach would peek around the corner and wave. 👋

Looking back now, I can see the clues were there all along.

And I wonder if yours are, too.

What are the little things that have followed you through your life? The things you naturally do, notice, care about, or bring to the people around you?

The things that seem so ordinary to you that you've never thought to call them a gift?

Maybe you've even been taught to call some of them something else.

What If Your “Too Much” Is a Clue?

In Flip the Script, I talk about the things we believe make us too ______.

Too loud.

Too quiet.

Too emotional.

Too enthusiastic.

Too sensitive.

Too organized.

Too curious.

Too serious.

Too much.

Funny thing about our “too much.”

Sometimes the very qualities we've spent years trying to tone down,

apologize for, or hide are connected to our greatest gifts.

Turns out, my “rainbows and puppies” look a whole lot more like sunshine and honeybees.

☀️🐝 And apparently, I've turned them into a full-blooming calling! 😆

Maybe your “too much” deserves another look, too.

What have you been trying to tone down, apologize for, or hide because someone

—even you—

decided it was too much?

And while you're looking, there may be another tiny word hiding some of your clues:

Just.

I'm just a mom.

I'm only a wife.

I'm basically the housekeeper, cook and bus driver.

I just listen when people need somebody.

I just make things.

I just organize stuff.

I just remember everyone's birthday.

I just...

What if it isn't “just”?

What if those ordinary things you've barely noticed are breadcrumbs?

What if you've been waiting for some giant flashing sign pointing toward your purpose while little pieces of it have been showing up in your life for years?

I don't think becoming who we're created to be always means becoming someone entirely new.

Sometimes it means finally recognizing the person God has been revealing all along.

Maybe today you don't need to know your entire purpose.

Maybe you don't need the business plan, degree, website,

money, perfect timing, or ten-year vision.

Maybe today you simply get curious.

What comes naturally to you?

What do people consistently come to you for?

What makes your heart come alive?

What have you dismissed because it seemed too ordinary?

What have you been told is too much?

What have you been calling just?

Follow the breadcrumbs.

There may be more evidence there than you realize.

And if somewhere deep inside your heart—even for one tiny second—you hear yourself think:

“I'm pretty awesome!”

I know! And I'm here to remind you of it!

You are deeply loved. You are wanted. You are needed. You are not alone.

Your dreams are worthy of being brought into the light.

Your presence on this blue spinning ball matters.

Stop calling “just” what God calls a gift.

You're amazing and created for a purpose!
